We curated „The Future of Cinema: What will Film be like in 2030?” — an evening program which hosted event pioneers in film and media who discussed ways to shape entertainment's undecided future, in a time when streaming culture reigns supreme and competition between tech, telecom and media giants shows no signs of waning.

We invited the following experts;

  • Jonah Blechman, Director of Communications at Revry, the first-ever queer global streaming service,

  • Jess Fuselier, Manager of Education and Research on the Creative Producing Program at Sundance Institute,

  • Michel Reilhac, transmedia author and Head of Studies at the Venice Biennale College, VR Curator for the Venice Biennale International Film Festival,

  • Liz Rosenthal, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Power the Pixel, Executive Producer of CreativeXR, VR Curator for the Venice Biennale International Film Festival,

  • Weerada Sucharitkul, Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of FilmDoo, a VOD platform specialising in independent and world cinema.

We asked our experts future-oriented questions on each field concerning the future of film:

FUTURE OF STORIES: What kinds of films will we tell?

Documentaries are thriving, tackling truth, ecology, and politics—while YouTube megatrends like ASMR Mukbang redefine "content creation." As native advertising blurs lines, will artistic and commercial filmmaking further split, or merge into something new?

FUTURE MAKERS: Who will create the films of tomorrow?

By 2030, an entire generation will have grown up with cameras in hand, constantly connected. What opportunities exist for young filmmakers today—and what will emerge in the next decade? Will entrepreneurship become central to filmmaking, or will AI take the reins?

FUTURE FILMTECH: How will technology shape the language and production of film?

From ancient theatre stagecraft to vertical phone screens, technology has always transformed entertainment. We explore the impact of game mechanics, VR, AR (visual and audio), AI-driven recommendations, algorithmic editing, CGI holograms, avatars, 5G, and beyond.

FUTURE FORMATS: What will the films of the future look like?

With endless content across platforms like Netflix, YouTube, TikTok, and independent alternatives, we are at the limits of screentime. As hundreds of hours of video are uploaded every minute, how will this overflow affect story length and quality? Will the future be more immersive, interactive, binge-worthy, or bite-sized? Will self-distribution enable more niche storytelling?

BRIDGING CONTENT AND AUDIENCES: Who will watch films, and how will they find them?

Streaming dominates, but finding the right content is more complex than ever. With AI, automation, data science, and social media reshaping content discovery, how will curation evolve? Can new technologies create hyper-personalized audience channels?

INCLUSIVITY & GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES: How can we create a more equitable industry?

Oscars and BAFTAs face ongoing diversity criticism. How do we ensure real inclusion in filmmaking? How do global perspectives shape our discussions, and how are European industry trends reflected in non-Western cinema?

BUSINESS MODELS VS. MONOPOLIZATION: How will the film industry adapt?

Tech, telecom, and media giants battle for dominance, intertwining content with platforms. But decentralized business models are emerging. What are they, and how will they shift industry dynamics?
