In 2020 we were delighted to support the Creative Europe MEDIA Desks in their Online Conference on the occasion of the German EU Council Presidency by scouting the Keynote Speaker in the artistic field (at the crossing of music and film, an area we know well) and by elaborating the AI-based case study.

Visions of a creative europe

Creative, innovative, diverse – what role do film, culture and media play in our society?

We focused on the question: How do Film and the Media shape our future society in Europe? The topic was explored from a variety of perspectives by cultural and media professionals from various fields ranging from music to film to artificial intelligence.

During 2020 we all had a glimpse into what it feels like when we can’t go to the cinema and collectively experience watching a good movie, talk about it afterwards, discuss, disagree, love it or diss it. A lot of us turned to streaming platforms instead. Even for those who have not, the question remained: how will we access, consume and make the most out of audiovisual culture, which helps shape us as human beings and as a modern society.

PROGRAMM

The program hosted ministers, commissioners, film score composers, AI artists, actors and active networkers to boost European audiovisual collaboration. Among the high-profile speakers of the day was the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media since 2013, a true expert in these matters -
Professor Monika Grütters.

We started this visionary day with the award-winning Icelandic musician and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, whom we scouted. AC and Hildur discussed why art and culture are important for our collective future. How can film and music as the "heart and soul of Europe" help to overcome the great challenges? Hildur gave her insights on how Europe sounds at the moment, and how it could sound in the future.

The AI case study was a fireside chat between AC and Christian Mio Loclair, Creative Director at Waltz Binaire, a new media artist, computer scientist and choreographer who explores the friction of nature colliding with data and digital procedures through interactive installations, audio-visual experiences, visual narratives and dance performances. They discussed AI driven artworks, projects and solutions in media and creative industries, exploring the impact AI has on society, culture and the arts.

The whole program and more information can be found here.

The event was presented by the Creative Europe MEDIA Desks in Germany, led by Creative Europe Desk Berlin-Brandenburg, and funded by the Minister of State for Culture and the Media.
